Israel Consumer Council Proposal leads to a Textbook Search Engine being added to the Ministry of Education Website
In Israel, textbooks are required to have approval from the Ministry of Education. However, there are instances in which – contrary to the Ministry’s standing instructions – schools require parents to purchase books that do not have such approval.
Till now, parents did not have a simple way of checking whether the textbooks that appeared on the lists from the schools had been approved or not.
The Israel Consumer Council, at a meeting of the Knesset’s Education Committee, suggested that – in order to make it easier for parents – a dedicated search engine be added to the Ministry of Education website. In this way, parents could check the approval status of each of the books that the schools were asking them to purchase.
The Ministry of Education adopted the Consumer Council’s proposal, and the search engine has been added to the Ministry’s website.
